SUMMARY:The 2.6 Lockdown Challenge
DESCRIPTION:On Sunday 26 April\, when thousands of runners and spectators should have been turning the capital’s streets into a colourful carnival at the 40th edition of the London Marathon\, people of all ages were running\, cycling\, hopping\, skipping\, cooking\, flipping\, cartwheeling\, bouncing\, dressing up and having fun to fundraise in a uniquely British way. \nThe 2.6 Challenge brought joy to lockdown\, dominating the news and social media as the nation united to help save the UK’s charities. The 2.6 Challenge\, born out of the biggest mass participation sports event\, officially started on 26 April\, and in just 16 days had raised more than £10 million. We were chuffed to bits that our supporters joined in the campaign with their own challenges. Check out what they got up to within the parameters of lockdown – truly inspirational stuff! \nThe Jamers Somerset Marathon\n \nSian James was set to be running the London Marathon alongside family friend\, Josh Packer. We are so grateful that she felt she didn’t want to let her sponsors and Ryan down\, so decided to undertake her own challenge alongside her family; Mark\, Olly and Phoebe. Here’s what they achieved: \n\nSian and Phoebe completed 13 miles each in 2hours 16mins\nOlly ran the full 26.2 miles in 4hours 31mins\nMark cycled 26.2 miles alongside Olly in 4hours 31mins.\n\nHaving spent many holidays and celebrations with the ‘Jamers’ through Ryan’s childhood\, it’s amazing to see them together as a family running in his name. We can’t wait for October 4th to see Sian take on the actual ‘London Marathon’ – go Sian! There’s still a few months to help further smash her fundraising goals – check out her page! \n“It’s 10 years since Michelle\, John and Charlotte lost their precious boy\, so if you are able to support this cause we would be so grateful. I will be running the marathon in October for all those kind people who have already supported me… I won’t let you down… nor you Ryan x.”  Sian James\, 2020. \nPollys 26.2km run around the garden\nFancy running around your garden 170 times? Well\, that’s exactly the idea that Clifton College student and our avid supporter\, Polly Pyke came up with! Polly had the support of her family and dog\, Inca\, during her amazing 26.2km achievement – certainly putting our ‘stay at home’ activities to shame! \nWe are really grateful for Polly’s support and everyone who sponsored her. Click here for Polly’s fundraising page. \n  \n

SUMMARY:Durham University - Hatfield College Charity Fashion Show
DESCRIPTION:The Fashion Show has become one of the biggest and most prestigious events in the Hatfield College’s Social calendar at Durham University. \n‘a Life for a Cure’ was delighted to be voted the charity to benefit from the event in March 2016 and are so grateful for the donation of £4\,800. Huge thanks to all the students who attended the evening and organised this fantastic event and in particular\, Charlotte Bresnahan and her friends for suggesting Ryan’s Meningitis Appeal. \nMichelle Bresnahan said “It’s really comforting for students to engage and be aware of meningitis. This devastating disease can affect anyone of any age\, at any time\, but one of the most ‘at risk’ age groups that often gets overlooked\, is young people aged between 15 and 24 years.” \n

SUMMARY:Lorraine’s Cycle Ride from Vietnam to Cambodia
DESCRIPTION:This breathtaking charity bike ride is one of the best in the world of fundraising events and will take us from Vietnam’s Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon) to the ancient temples of Angkor Wat in Cambodia. Upon arrival\, we’ll have time to explore the fascinating city of Saigon – the heart of Vietnam – before we commence with our charity challenge. \nOur 400km charity cycle route will take us through many traditional Vietnamese villages\, following gorgeous streams and rivers\, passing paddy fields and adjacent to stunning mountains. Few locals will have seen foreigners cycling past\, and their interest and hospitality will spur on even the most tired cyclist. \nWe then cross the border into Cambodia and push on to the world famous temple site of Angkor Wat – arguably one of most fascinating wonders of the world! Built from 879 – 1191AD by the Khmer civilisation\, Ankgor Wat represents one of mankind’s most astonishing architectural achievements and is certainly the jewel in Cambodia’s crown. \nTwo fascinating countries – one awesome charity challenge.

SUMMARY:Three Peaks Challenge
DESCRIPTION:Michelle\, John and Charlotte have always said that Ryan just ‘got it’ and completing the Three Peaks Challenge for Meningitis in August 2011 ensured that we ‘got’ what it means to fundraise for a Life for a Cure.  Raising money is only half of the story; being tested  outside our comfort zone reminded us what we can achieve –  a fitting legacy to Ryan\, who always lived his life this way. \nI can honestly say that completing this challenge – climbing Ben Nevis\, Scarfell and Snowdon over one weekend was the toughest and smelliest physical challenge I have ever completed.  As a runner\, I naively thought I would be well equipped for this.  I soon discovered that walking boots need careful negotiation and that walking poles are more than an accessory. \nI’m not one for great adventures and I’m not one for the great outdoors\, so I have my husband Richard\, and sister in law Jill to thank for getting me on this challenge in the first place; looking back I feel totally blessed to have completed the challenge with them.  We shared bunks and a mini bus with strangers who became allies\, and learned that it would be the least equipped and least prepared walkers that would prove to be the most humbling in their refusal to give in\, for each walker on the trip had their own intimate connection with meningitis. Quitting wasn’t an option. \nWe achieved the accolade from our guide for being the group with whom he has spent the longest time ever on Scafell (hence missing the time limit on the challenge) and who carried the widest range of confectionary with them;Three Peak law is\, ‘never refuse a sweet while walking’ and learn to sleep amidst the stench of smelly socks on the mini bus if you intend to last the course. \nI always knew that Jill was an amazing sister in law – I also knew that she was driven and competitive.  I didn’t realise that she would be the gentle soul massaging her brother’s calves\, sharing her energy drinks with us and wisely ignoring my tears when Richard decided he would have to turn back on Snowdon due to crippling leg cramps.  On reaching the top of Snowdon\, our achievement was tempered by realising Richard wasn’t with us and that we had always planned to do this challenge together. \nSo\, I will never forget the moment when our guide appeared in the cafe at the top of Snowdon (a refuelling spot for our long descent) to tell me\, ‘your husband’s asking for a strong cup of tea\, he’s on his way up’.  It transpired that Richard had wrestled with his conscience\, reminded himself of John’s battle in the London Marathon\, reminded himself that we were doing this for Ryan\, and\, after 3 false starts\, decided not to quit the Challenge after all; he had practically crawled up Snowdon on his hands and knees.  After 20+ years of marriage I know how much I love and admire Richard\, but I’m not ashamed to say that I saw him through fresh eyes as he emerged from the Welsh mist\, in agony\, more than ready for that cup of tea. \nI’m in no hurry to see Snowdon again\, but I can look back and thank Ryan for teaching us that going one step at a time\, even when self-belief is lost\, is a life changer.  And Ryan would surely smile on hearing that many of Richard’s sponsors seemed to double their donations on hearing about his Snowdon show down. That was over £2\,000 well earned as far as we’re concerned. \nJeanne Fairs \n \n  \n  \n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:LEJOG 1\,000 mile Cycle Challenge
DESCRIPTION:  \nNigel Turner [52] from Clevedon\, his two brothers Mike Turner [46] from Keynsham and Jonathan Turner [47] from Birmingham with an old school mate Peter Scaife [52] successfully completed 1\,015 miles in the saddle from Lands End to John O’Groats. Taking in over 69\,000 feet of climbing they faced between 8-12 hours a day and on the way passed through some of the most beautiful countryside in the UK.Preparation for the ride started in earnest in February so that by the time we set-off\, each of us had notched up over 1\,000 miles in the saddle. Routes were researched ensuring we kept to minor roads\, convenient friends or B & B accommodation close to pubs was booked\, energy food was accumulated and support crew in the form of Nigel’s parents was enlisted. \nStarting at 07.30 on a cool June morning we had no real concept of what lay in store for us. Sure we had read many accounts of what it might be like but here we were doing it for the first time. We completed the gruelling task 9 days later at an average speed of 14.6 MPH finishing at 9pm on Saturday 2nd July 2011. \nOur routine meant a reasonably early start but not before we had taken on board a full fry-up breakfast. We then tried to get some early miles in (normally about 40) before we stopped for our first major stop of the day – a suitable café. Americanos all round and plenty of cake and then back on the saddle until we met up with support for a good long lunch – BLT’s were the favourite and any other high calorie foods that we could stuff down. After about an hour it was time to get going again until the all-important time for tea with more cakes! Ideally by then we would only have another couple of hours of cycling left but some days it wasn’t like that and on three occasions we were rolling in as late as 9 o’clock. \nOver the nine days we were lucky enough to see some of the most fantastic landscapes and ride on some of the quietest roads. We were incredibly lucky with the weather and whilst did we have some rain; it managed to confine itself to one torrential downpour so we got soaked to the skin but then we dried off again. \nWe met many cyclists doing the same thing and it was great to swap stories and in one case to help them on their way. \nAs an experience it ranked with all four of us as one of the greatest nine days of our lives. Hardly a cross word was said\, we laughed at each other’s discomfort\, we revelled in our male company and we ended up fitter than any of us had been or ever likely to be again! \nTo complete this ride was a great achievement but to donate over £2000 to our friends John & Michelle Bresnahan on behalf of Ryan and his memory made the pain and sweat even more worthwhile. \nNigel would like to thank all friends and family for their support and donations for this worthwhile cause. The boys all had an immensely enjoyable week with no mechanical issues and only one solitary puncture between them. \n

SUMMARY:Two Bridges Bressie Trail
DESCRIPTION:The Two Bridges Bressie Trail was the first of what I hope will be a series of varied challenges in memory of Ryan and to raise funds for “a Life for a Cure”.   From my first idea for the Trail right up to its completion\, I have been completely overwhelmed by the love\, support and encouragement I have had from almost everyone who knew about my challenge. \nThe first part of the Trail was the Sydney Harbour Bridge Climb and as the day dawned my friend Lian\, who was also raising funds\, and I knew that Ryan was with us! It was a sunny\, bright\, clear and beautiful day and all the staff at the Bridge Climb thought the view from the top of the Bridge would be spectacular. They were not wrong. After dressing in the compulsory Bridge jumpsuit and completing the training\, we were ready for Pete our leader to begin the climb. The next two hours were AWESOME ( a word Ryan loved!) and safely harnessed to the Bridge we climbed our way to the top with an unbelieveable view of Sydney right out to the Blue Mountains. At the top photos were taken and we got the chance to make a wish on a special platform right in the middle of the Bridges highest point – I know you know my wish Rys! Wishes sent\, we began the descent still taking in the incredible sights and before we knew it – the first part of the Trail was complete! The sense of achievement at the bottom was tangible and with spirits soaring and happy memories of Ryan\, we celebrated with steak and cocktails – both usually forbidden treats for me. \nStrangely once the first part of the trail was completed\, the second seemed so much more daunting! Carrying on my training in Australia\, I promised myself that the most important thing was to complete the Trail however long it took. The Bristol Half Marathon day dawned and the emotion of the day was clear from the start. As one of more than 70 people all running for Ryan\, we gathered together at College Green to be photographed with Michelle\, John and Shims. With our ” a Life for a Cure” vests we certainly looked the part but having had four major operations since my last half marathon\, I wondered whether I would let everyone down. Ryan sent me the sign I needed in the form of a Heart FM car registration beginning RY07 – Ryans favourite number that we all had on the back of our vests! Despite the rain I was determined to get round the course and with a lot of help from in the last few miles from Shims\, Celeste and Rodney and some very special supporters\, I MADE IT! The last few metres were the most emotional carrying a photograph of Ryan with me over the finish line and as I collected my medal and shared a tear with Michelle and my family and friends we were amazed to hear Take That playing in the Runners Village – the final sign if we needed it that Ryan was with us. \nMy heartfelt thanks to everyone who has sponsored me – I cannot hope to repay your kindness and generosity so I will simply thank you all from the bottom of my heart. I hope very soon to be able to give you the total sum raised by the Bressie Trail – so watch this space. \nMy final words as a Godmother\, Aunty and friend are the same as those on the special Bridge Climb T- Shirts we wore and the photograph I carried over the line – ” For Ryan – With Love Always.”

SUMMARY:Ride 4 Ryan
DESCRIPTION:Dear all Friends\, Family & NHSD Colleagues \nTurner/Wade Team Ride4Ryan completed the Great Weston Ride 56 miles across the Mendips on Sunday 18th July. \nWe left home at 7.30 am and headed to Bristol – Long Ashton\, setting-off cycling at 08.30 hrs – rather dull\, cloudy and windy. We were surrounded by several hundred rather professional cyclists all “in the gear”!— and then us IN PINK. \nThe first 15 miles were quite hilly and then the drizzle came which was rather horrid – one minute you are cold and wet and then hot and wet the next! \nThe first 2 hours were the worst as constant inclines up\, and very little down. Glasses fogged up and wet and we did over 2 hrs without stopping at all as it was too wet to stop. We stopped at the foot of Burrington Coombe for food and drink in the rain! Then we continued the 3 mile 6% climb- all achieving this on our bikes- and Nigel on his one speed 50 year old postman’s bike [all too easily actually] and Eleanor – my niece aged 12 got to the top first! The breeze and drizzle continued along the top. \nWeather soon improved  and so did the terrain – all country lanes mostly flat. Nigel’s postman’s bike had a massive hooter on it which provided endless entertainment as he hooted at every passer by – a few near heart attacks. \nLunch stop outside the pub at Priddy- a quaint Mendips village\, where Nigel’s parents met us with our food\, drink & warm tops. We were halfway at this point at midday. A good carbo load for us all – and of course beer for Nigel! \nGreat route after this\, down winding empty country lanes for miles\, getting some real speed up [31mph] then it flattened out. Another couple of stops at Mark and then Burnham and legs at this stage especially on the 3 girls were starting to really ache – we were at about 45 miles now. Sun was out\, so much warmer lower down and the beckoning sea gulls gave us a clue we were heading towards the sea and home! \nLovely quiet lanes into Weston completed the last 10 miles and with the end in sight with me relaying my milometer it got us all to the end with cheers and claps from the GWR team and fellow cyclists along the sea front. \nFantastic organisation from the GWR team\, from signage along the way\, no map needed at all\, drink stops\, marshals\, excellent start and finish arrangements . Then our reward was free fish & chips and a ride on the Weston Eye free courtesy of the GWR organisers. We had maintained a 10.6mph all day average speed and it had taken 7 1/2 hours\, we had needed several breaks to snack and drink. \nThe ride was exhausting\, fun\, tiring\, aching\, cramping\, numbing and with lots of fun thrown in too but to quote Sophie “none of that matters because its all for Ryan” We haven’t planned\, trained for and tirelessly gained sponsors for this event for any other reason except to raise money in memory of a charming\, talented young sportsman –  Ryan Bresnahan who passed away suddenly from Meningitis on 31st March 2010 aged just 16. He was in our thoughts at many times over the day and our efforts are worth it when all of you have helped us reach our goal and exceed it. \nThe Ride4Ryan team of 7 has raised well over £2000 for Meningitis – to \nhelp research and find a vaccine for this devastating disease. I would like to thank Aunty Penny\, Jonathan and Eleanor & Sophie’s friend Ashby for their fantastic support and achievement on the day and gathering sponsors. \nIt just leaves me to say a huge big THANK YOU to YOU all for your support and generosity. \nCheck out our virgin website for everyone’s messages and keep an eye of Ryan’s site as our event\, pictures and final amount raised will be on the “Life for a Cure” site in the next few weeks atwww.ryansbresnahan.org Nicky\, Nigel\, Sophie\, Penny\, Jonathan\, Eleanor & Ashby \nimg class=”aligncenter” title=”ride4ryan2″ src=”http://ryanbresnahan.org/wp-content/uploads/2010/11/ride4ryan2.bmp” alt=”” />

SUMMARY:Bristol to Paris Bike Ride
DESCRIPTION:The Big Bike Ride Bristol to Paris\nOn Saturday 4th July we all set off very early with a mixture of apprehension and excitement. Well what an adventure we had! After four days\, 385 miles\, constant sunshine\, litres of water\, numerous pints and French pastries we arrived at The Eiffel Tower Paris. We were knackered but extremely exhilarated and ready to party! It was a great challenge during which we all met new friends and finished with an amazing sense of achievement. I personally felt very privileged to be part of this event and am delighted that the sponsorship money I raised can go to such a worthwhile cause.

SUMMARY:Fashion Auction
DESCRIPTION:Around thirty gorgeous females all connected to the organizers in some way\, arrived at Jane’s beautiful home to a glass of ‘fizz’\, nibbles\, rails of clothes and a wonderful welcoming atmosphere. What more could us girls need or in fact\, want! \nEveryone was given the auction list and directed to look at the items available and also guided to peruse other irresistible garments to buy. The auction wasn’t just about clothes\, there was also a great selection of handbags\, accessories\, beauty/hair treatments\, cookery course\, cases of wine and many more appealing items – all of which were donated. Karen did an excellent job in cajoling the ladies to up their bids on the 25 items. \nThe level of enthusiasm and generosity was incredible and the evening raised an enormous total of £3\,200 – not bad for a few hours of fun and enjoyment! But of course it wasn’t just the work on the night –  Jane\, Karen and Mo had put in a lot of time\, thought and attention to detail\, to make it such a success for several weeks leading up to the evening. I can’t thank you enough! There were lots of little helpers to thank too – Ryan would have been so proud of all of you. \nIt was an honour to attend and my sincere thanks go to ALL the donors that contributed to the night\, and of course to all the kind\, supportive and generous friends who attended the event. \nIf anyone else would like to organize a similar event for Ryan’s Appeal\, please let me know. It’s a great way to catch up with girl friends\, clear out the bulging wardrobes and raise lots of money! \nLove and thanks \nMichelle Bresnahan xxxX

SUMMARY:Bridgett's Bristol 10k
DESCRIPTION:I decided to run the Bristol 10k in the evening of Ryan’s Day. I was so moved by what was such a heart-warming occasion and by the strength of John\, Michelle and Shim that I felt compelled to do something to help. \nSo on the morning of Sunday May 9th I put on my running shoes along with thousands of others. Spurred on by the memory of Ryan I completed the run in my fastest time to date. \nI would like to thank everyone who very kindly sponsored me and helped me to raise an amazing £1\,900.00 for ‘a life for a Cure’. \nThank you Bridgett\, we are delighted to acknowledge your superb achievement in raising an incredible £1\,900 so quickly after ‘Ryan’s day’\, it really will make a difference. \nLove John\, Michelle and Charlotte xxxx

SUMMARY:Dean House Charity Day
DESCRIPTION:Dean House decided to dedicate their Charity Day as a tribute to Ryan. He was friends with many pupils and ex-pupils from St. John’s. \nZoe Ward\, one of Ryan’s closest friends\, wrote a piece for their school newsletter as follows: \nRyan Bresnahan was a good looking\, talented and gifted 16 year old. He tragically passed away from Meningitis on 31st March 2010. However\, he was in no pain and was not ill. It happened over a period of a few hours and he was put through next to no suffering. He enjoyed life and made the most of opportunities that came his way. \nThe children of the school were asked to ‘pay’ to wear beach themed clothing and enjoyed a variety of summer and beach games on the field at break time. These games included; cricket\, rounders\, surfing\, netball\, football and races. With boiling weather and enthusiastic children the day proved to be a great success. The children raised a great amount and enjoyed themselves doing it! \nWe express our sincere appreciation to the school and Zoe’s family for sharing our story and raising a fabulous £363 for Ryan’s Appeal.
